Via the BBC:  David Cameron to apologise to Queen over ‘purred’ remark

Speaking in New York, Mr Cameron told Mr Bloomberg he had phoned the Queen to tell her the result.

“She purred down the line,” he said. “I’ve never heard someone so happy.”

  3. Is it possible that “purred down the line” is some kind of English idiom?

    Leaving that aside, I think the apology is coming due to the fact that Cameron talked about the conversation rather than the possible association with cats.
