100 Best Quotes from The Wire

Someone with a lot of time on his hands has compiled a 10 minute video purporting to be “A selection of the top 100 quotes from The Wire, the greatest TV show ever made.”

Not surprisingly, virtually all of them contain NSFW language, with the F- and N-words being especially well represented.

  1. Off the top of me head (so I may not have it all correct), I would have included:

    1) Judge Phelan lecturing Detective McNulty on the use of then and than.

    2) The Greek saying, “You should have had a son,” and Vondas replying, “But then I would have had a wife.”

    3) White Mike saying, “Look at this, Nicky Sobotka living the life.”

    4) Nick Sobotka saying to his girlfriend, “They were staring right at me.”

    5) Detective Moreland saying to Horseface, “Pretty smart for a fat man.”

    6) The INS man saying to Detective McNulty, “Step into my world, Virginia.”

    7) McNulty saying, “Have you seen what happens to unidentified corpses? I have.”

    8) Detective Greggs telling Lieutenant Daniels, “I tell your wife if you tell mine.”

    9) Detective Hauk saying, “We need something that can stand up to the modern urban crime environment.”

    10) Cutty saying to Avon, “That thing that lets you flow like you flow, it ain’t in me no more.” (Note, this was almost in the compilation.)

    11) Detective McNulty saying to Stringer, “Catch you later,” when arresting Avon.

    12) Omar saying, “What you see Butch,” and Butch replying, “Too much boy, too much.”

    13) Omar telling Marlo, “You’ve mistaken me for someone who repeats himself.”

    14) Sergei saying, “Boris, why is it always Boris?”

    15) Stringer saying, “Not my size, I’m an extra large,” and D’Angelo’s wife saying, “No doubt.”

    16) Detective Sydnor saying, “I stepped in some dog shit,” and Detective McNulty saying, “You hope.”

    17) Brother Mouzone saying, “Do you know what the most dangerous thing in America is Lamar? A n***** with a library card.”

    18) Norman Wilson saying, “Robert Kennedy was the last white man I could vote for.”

    19) Proposition Joe telling Marlo, “You don’t have to do this.” No, wait, that’s No Country for Old Men, though Prop Joe did say something much to the same effect.

    20) And my favorite, the long sequence with Detective Moreland and Detective McNulty reviewing a long cold case crime scene with nothing but the word MF used over and over and over and over.

  2. Tim D. says:

Maybe I missed it in the montage, but they should have included the very first scene from Season 1, episode 1.

McNulty: Well, if every time, Snot Boogie stole the money, why’d you let him play?

Kid: Got to. It’s America, man.

#20 was priceless. Without question, one of the greatest series on television. It’s like Shakespeare in Baltimore.

Best quote? Anytime Clay Davis said “Sheee…”
