AFFIRMATIVE LOGIC

Slate’s “jurisprudence” columnist takes issue with the Bush logic on affirmative action, arguing that racial discrimination in favor of blacks and Hispanics isn’t actually racial discrimination against whites, because the vast majority of whites who fail to gain admission to prestige colleges are rejected for reasons other than racial quotas. Isn’t that like saying cigarette smoking isn’t bad for you, since most people who die do so for reasons other than tobacco-induced lung cancer?
