THE TERRORISTS HAVE AREADY WON

THE TERRORISTS HAVE AREADY WON: WaPo reports that, in addition to the already absurd wanding, metal detecting, shoe checking, and other indignities airplane passengers are being subjected to, all three Washington area airports are now doing random searches of cars approaching the terminal. It looks like people have finally had enough of this nonsense and are going to sue. Good. Giving up our liberties for virtually no added security is a horrible idea. It is also rather clearly unconstitutional: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” (US Constitution, Amendment IV)

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia.
