RAGGED TROOPS: AP’s story Ragged Iraqi Troops Surrender to Allies, once again, isn’t really news per se. We’ve known for hours that the 51st Division had surrendered, despite the “21 minutes ago” timestamp. What is interesting is this description of the Iraqi soldiers:
The surrendering soldiers were not the fabled and well-fed Republican Guardsmen who anchor Saddam’s defense â for the most part, these were a rag-tag army, many of them draftees, often in T-shirts. Their small arms could accomplish little against opposing forces wielding 21st century weaponry.“A lot of them looked hungry. They haven’t been fed in a while,” said one U.S. military official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Amazing. No wonder they’re in such a hurry to surrender.
