REPORTERS OR AMERICANS: Amitai Etzioni revisits an old argument: Reporters First, Americans Second?. I well remember the Wallace-Jennings-Connell exchange. My hope, and indeed my impression, is that the current policy of “embedding” journalists with soldiers makes the journalists more empathetic with the troops they are covering. Of course, I’m not spending a lot of time watching CBS–or ABC–news these days.

He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia.
