 Outside the Beltway

DAVID BRINKLEY, R.I.P.

WaPo reports this sad news: David Brinkley Dies at 82. He died last night from complications from a fall at his home in Houston.

Like others of my generation, I came to know him late in his career from his Sunday morning show, “This Week with David Brinkley.” That show revamped the genre but has not been the same since his departure in November 1996. He’ll be missed.

This is so sad. I have such fond memories of watching him on "This Week."

"This Week" was never the same after he left.

Sam Donaldson's first hour was taken up with Brinkley memories this morning. I guess George Step.'s decline isn't much of a testament to his memory.

Nope. I like Sam, Cookie and even Stephy; but the show definitely lost something when Brinkley left. He was a true moderator and kept the show on a little bit higher plane. It just became too many hosts, too many participants in subsequent incarnations. Russett basically stole the Brinkley format and has done it better than anyone has done This Week lately.

Brinkley will be missed. George Will is the only reason I watch "this week" these days.

He probably fell over when he saw Stephy's ratings and what became of is old show.

Does anybody know if Brinkley ever interviewed Bing Crosby? They both had very peculiar ways of emphasizing (if not exaggerating) the first consonant on a number of words. That would have been a funny interview to watch.

Huntley/Brinkley together again.
Goodnight Chet.
Goodnight David.
