JUDGE BLOCKS ABORTION LAW

AP:

In a ruling that could have coast-to-coast effect, a federal judge Thursday blocked the government’s new ban on certain late-term abortions–the second court victory for abortion-rights advocates since President Bush signed the law.

This is actually a very good thing for both sides. It’s quite arguable that the law is indeed unconstitutional under current Supreme Court doctrine. So, the quicker the law gets on track for SCOTUS review, the better.

I guess since I'm lazy, someone's going to have to tell me the difference between the law just passed by Congress and the one passed by the Nebraska legislature that was struck down.

There's a difference?

Nor, well, one obvious difference is that one law was passed at the state level, and the other at the federal level.

Which makes me wonder what provision of the US constitution gives the federal government the power to outlaw abortion of any sort.
