TV RATINGS

Max Jacobs observes,

It really is funny how media executives always seem to refuse to acknowledge new trends in their industries (the music industry still doesn’t have a viable industry-based model for distributing digital music). Right now they are claiming that Nielsen has a problem with their sample after Nielsen reported that prime time TV viewing by men 18-34 is down 8% compared to last year. Nielsen explains the drop as being due to growing use of DVD’s and video games, use of which is up 9% this year among 18-24 year olds. Personally I can tell you that my viewing habits are much different this year. Last night, my wife and I watched Finding Nemo on DVD, Carnivale on HBO on Demand and then Everybody Loves Raymond on Tivo. Notice not a second of live TV in there anywhere and accept for commercials at warp speed on the Tivo, no advertising.

Same here. About the only thing I watch “live” anymore are sporting events and presidential speeches. I don’t even watch the Sunday talking head shows live anymore; much better to be able to FF through the boring guests.

My tv set broke down like a year ago and I decided not to purchase a new one. People look at me as if I was a martian when I tell them lol. But I have survived (to be frank partly because I spent 7-8 hours a day in front of the pc monitor), and I feel a lot less bombarded with trash and mediocrity. I live in Cuernavaca, México, and tv here is mostly garbage, but I have the impression it's the same most everywhere.
