Kate has a fine post.

I disagree that the improved regulations are an overreaction. The U.S. beef export industry doesn't have a prayer of recovering without these changes. The industry's recovery will probably also require additional testing. I don't think we have to test every cow slaughtered, like Japan. We should test a larger percentage of all cows brought to slaughter. I have a number of posts about BSE, or mad cow disease, which can be accessed here.

BELTWAY TRAFFIC JAM

Even with a lot of people on holiday break, DC area traffic is rough. Various vehicles breaking down and people clogging up the lane by trying to cheat the system don’t help.

The daily links:

  • Dodd Harris had dinner with Susanna Cornett and Brent of The Ville.

  • Erick Erickson sees a culinary connection to the Iranian earthquake.
  • Venomous Kate is looking for some skin.
  • Jay Solo has pics of his vacation in Monterey. (Thankfully, no nudity is involved.)
  • Eric the Viking has an interesting Election ‘04 game.

A wonderful time for driving in the Beltway region, as pothole season hits early this year! Indeed, where I come from, we only have four seasons, none of them involving potholes.

But I digress: On with the daily linkfest!

BELTWAY TRAFFIC JAM

Another day of heavy traffic for the poor slobs driving in and out of DC: a derailed freight train caused closure of some passenger service, adding to the fun today.

Today’s linkage:

  • Venomous Kate is recovering but won’t be back to regular blogging until the New Year.

  • Meryl Yourish got a free trinket for enduring a 12 hour movie marathon.
  • Jerry Scharf reports the Russians doing something helpful.
  • Kevin Aylward is among many commenting on Michael Jackson’s conversion to Islam.
  • Steven Taylor reports that the Flu has now achieved an Electoral College majority.

A weird commuting day for those in the DC area: A combination of rain, snow, and reindeer.

BELTWAY TRAFFIC JAM

Despite the weekend snowfall and “wintry mix,” the roads were reasonably drivable in the DC metro area today.

The linkfest:

  • PoliBlog Today’s List features great Saddam quotes. Feel free to play along.

  • Kris Vilamaa reports that THE ENTIRE Alabama Supreme Court will recuse itself from hearing Roy Moore’s appeal. First time I’ve ever heard of that happening.
  • Lying in Ponds ponders whether Bush is being too doggone honest.
  • Lance Haun collects some nutty quotes from the Dean for America blog on Saddam’s capture.

BELTWAY TRAFFIC JAM

Morning traffic must have been especially joyous today, as bomb threats shut down two Metro lines. One hopes that won’t happen again this afternoon.

On with the linkage:

  • Today is Susanna Cornett’s last day on her job in Joisey before moving on to Alabam’.

  • Meryl Yourish faces down foes tougher than the Hulk has ever encountered.
  • Dodd Harris has hit a commendable personal milestone.
  • Kathy Kinsley has an idea for an immigration amendment to the Constitution.
  • Aaron Schatz explains why the Patriots aren’t #1 even though they are.

BELTWAY TRAFFIC JAM

Just the regular, short, commute this evening thankfully. I’ll let the Inside the Beltway folks deal with the traffic–and flooding–tonight.

The nightly links:

  • Professor Bainbridge turned 45 today. Lift your wine glasses in celebration.

  • Ed Moltzen spots a birthday tradition I like.
  • Oscar Jr. reports that beer is very cheap in Ethiopia. Coincidentally, the national currently is the birr.
  • Julie Neidlinger is the same politically as Stalin, Saddam, Chirac, and the Pope.
  • Kevin Aylward has yet more celebrity porn news.

Celebrity and porn would both be a stretch for the mayor. But hey at least she came to the right place...

I managed to stay outside the Beltway today although, ironically, one of our associates at United Press International came out to pick up some books and got stuck in traffic this morning!

BELTWAY TRAFFIC JAM

I had a luncheon meeting at the National Press Club, so had to wade into DC again. It’s actually a reasonably pleasant trip if one can make it, as I did, in off peak hours–leaving at noon and returning by 3:30.

On with the daily linkfest:

  • Steven Taylor has banned John Kerry from his comments section.

  • Matthew Yglesias asks why the Loretta Sanchez endorsement of Dean is getting less attention than Gore’s.
  • Kate is getting more like Rush Limbaugh every day.
  • Rob Tagorda has an interesting comparison of three treatments of a news story.
  • OTB is on the blogroll at Edwards Grassroots 2004.
