 Outside the Beltway

Gettin’ Old

Will Collier informs us that Van Halen’s “Jump” was the #1 song in the country twenty years ago this week. He even provides a link to a clip of the song, which I’ll refrain from duplicating since it’s on his (or actually, Stephen’s) bandwidth.

I was exactly two months shy of high school graduation at the time. And, indeed, that song is substantially older now than many of the “oldies” they played on the radio were then.

Update: Actually, I mistook the permalink URL for the Real Audio URL. By the way, this was one of the worst songs on that album.

Link away--it's actually on Van Halen's own bandwidth.

Oh, and it was the last year of junior high (9th grade) for me...

Heh, Van Halen seems like new music to me. Queen's A Night at the Opera was released the year I graduated high school.

That's ok James, I was a few months shy of ending 4th grade back then.... :-P

Okay, let's go the other direction. I was a First Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, awaiting the birth of my eldest child, the now-Jarhead, who turns 20 in May. ;-)

I, too, was an adult then; had been in the AF for three years (22 years old). Hopefully, that will make you feel better.

GETTIN’ OLD

Man, I haven’t heard of most of the “artists” featured on the latest pop charts. 50 cent? (No “s,” apparently.) Evanescence? (Nothing to do with AlkaSeltzer, I’m led to believe.) I have heard of Linkin Park, although I wouldn’t recognize any of their work.

I am familiar with Madonna, Cher, and the Monkees, though. All, oddly, are in the top 10 this week.
