 Outside the Beltway

Michael Moore’s Vision

David Brooks [RSS]:

In years past, American liberals have had to settle for intellectual and moral leadership from the likes of John Dewey, Reinhold Niebuhr and Martin Luther King Jr. But now, a grander beacon has appeared on the mountaintop, and from sea to shining sea, tens of thousands have joined in the adulation.

So it is worth taking a moment to study the metaphysics of Michael Moore. For Moore is not only a filmmaker; he is a man of ideas, and his work is based on an actual worldview.

Like Hemingway, Moore does his boldest thinking while abroad. For example, it was during an interview with the British paper The Mirror that Moore unfurled what is perhaps the central insight of his oeuvre, that Americans are kind of crappy.

“They are possibly the dumbest people on the planet . . . in thrall to conniving, thieving smug [pieces of the human anatomy],” Moore intoned. “We Americans suffer from an enforced ignorance. We don’t know about anything that’s happening outside our country. Our stupidity is embarrassing.”

Heh.

Michael Moore
----
Michael Moore,
he ain't so wise
he makes a living
telling lies.

"Regulate this,
regulate that!"
Clinging to the gub'ment
like a spoiled little brat.

Rigid thinking
masked with rage
is a backward method
like minimum wage.

Fourteen an Hour,
don't fail HIS test!
Anything less
and your under arrest.

Obnoxious and loud,
so filled with hate.
He really can't help it
he's a ward of the state.

"I'll poke my camera
into your face
make you look guilty
and berate you in place!"

"Those greedy corporations,"
Ewwwww, they're so bad!
I'll teach them a lesson.
Conform! or be sad!"

Like a union thug
he'll get in your face.
Show you who's boss
and dump on your race.

Don't "cross the line"
you know what you'll get,
a busted lip
and a lawn full of shit.

Demean, intimidate,
berate and ridicule;
these are the methods
that Michael finds cool.

This has been my complaint against the left/lib/dem/whatever for decades: They have not had an original thought since the 70's - at least. Where are they in the national discussion of foreign policy? It's always back to the future - let's go back to the 90's when we were loved. Jeez.

Moore seems part of an interesting cultural trend: the rise of independent film makers. Mel Gibson is another example of this trend. First porno, now political films. Tomorrow perhaps mainstream entertainment pictures. With digital cameras and personal computers making it ever cheaper to produce decent video this trend will no doubt continue. In the 2008 election there will undoubtedly be more political films, from both sides of the political spectrum.

At long last, Michael Moore speaks about a subject he knows personally and intimately. Now we know how he became wealthy...
