Snoop Dogg Rejected by Harvard

“If an extraterrestrial can get some Ivy League love,” Mr. Dogg must be wondering, “then why can’t a pimp”?

Snoop Dogg Deal Falls Through (Harvard Crimson)

Snoop Dogg will be taking his “Gin and Juice” somewhere else.

The rapper had been in negotiations with the Harvard Concert Commission (HCC) to perform on campus May 1, but the concert has been cancelled due in part to financial considerations, Undergraduate Council (UC) President Matthew J. Glazer ’06 announced yesterday.

“Due to many unavoidable obstacles, including financial considerations, the UC and the HCC have decided not to move forward with plans to bring Snoop Dogg to Harvard,” Glazer said.

He said that unanticipated security costs and delays made it impossible for the plans to be finalized in time.

But, according to CBS News, money may only be half the story:

Snoop Snubbed By Harvard

Some Harvard students had objected to the appearance, citing lyrics on Snoop Dogg’s latest album about slapping women to keep them under control.

In “R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece,” the song “Can You Control Yo Hoe” includes the line “If she won’t do what you say, why aren’t you slapping her?”

One wonders whether these complaints — in the aftermath of the Larry Summers fiasco — had a larger impact than they otherwise would have. After all, as the Washington Post reports, the president is trying extra hard to make amends: “You know, universities like ours were structured in their basic structure many years ago, and it’s probably an exaggeration but not too much of one to say that they were designed by men for men.”

Summers is speaking like he's trying too hard.

Not that I'm an enemy of free speech, but I'd be more impressed with the Harvard kids if they changed their mind just cuz of Snoop's content. I'm disappointed that they'd invite him in the first place.

Snoop Dogg is playing Cornell University's infamous Slope Day festival on the last day of classes, so he hasn't been entirely snubbed by the Ivy League.
