Former White House counsel Lloyd Cutler dies at 87 (Reuters)
Lloyd Cutler, who served as White House counsel to former U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, died on Sunday after a long illness, his law firm said in a statement. Cutler was 87.
A prominent Washington attorney and a senior counsel at the high-powered firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, Cutler showed himself to be above partisan politics by working on various assignments for six U.S. presidents from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush.
“Lloyd Cutler served our nation with dedication and distinction throughout his extraordinary career,” Bush said in a statement. “He was a devoted public servant who had a profound influence on the legal profession.”
I hadn’t heard he was ill. I suppose 87 qualifies as “a ripe old age.” Not many men get to serve six presidents. An impressive life, to be sure.
