J.K. Rowling Begins Last Harry Potter Book

The Harry Potter series will apparently be ending with the next installment, which author J.K. Rowling plans to write next year.

J.K. Rowling, the British author of the record-selling Harry Potter series, said she plans to start writing the final book about the boy wizard next month and finish it some time in 2006. “For 2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series,” the British author wrote on her official website. “I contemplate the task with mingled feelings of excitement and dread, because I can’t wait to get started.”

Joanne Kathleen Rowling, 40, has spent much of the past decade writing about the adventures of Potter and his friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. On her website, she said she felt compelled to wrap up the gripping tale that has captured the imagination of millions of children and adults worldwide. At the same time, Rowling doubted her ability to answer all the questions generated by the seven-part series.

The writer also wondered about her life after Potter. “It will all be over at last and I can’t quite imagine life without Harry,” she said.

I visited the Rowling website but find navigating it ridiculously cumbersome. The graphics are very interesting to look at but finding actual information is difficult. Even with the Text Only version, the latest “news” is from the 25th and mentions nothing about this book.

The 6th book covered too little ground; a great deal of Rowling’s ultimate merit as a writer will depend on whether she wraps up the dangling threads, or appears to forget about them.

My pet example: In # 1, Dumbledore tells Harry that James Potter saved Snape’s life. Where did THAT ever resurface?

Anyway, look for a 1000-page tome, if she does it right.

  3. I believe we’ve always known this was going to be the last book. There was to be one book for each year at Hogwarts.

I wonder if “life without Harry” is supposed to be a dark hint?

The incident in which James saved Snape’s life was covered briefly in book two and in detail in book three, actually.

No way! I’ve forgotten those books already???

Sigh. Time for rereading. Thanks, Alex.
