North American Union to Replace the USA?

Jerome Corsi, one of the authors of Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, charges that President Bush has a secret plan to merge the United States with Canada and Mexico.

President Bush is pursuing a globalist agenda to create a North American Union, effectively erasing our borders with both Mexico and Canada. This was the hidden agenda behind the Bush administration’s true open borders policy. Secretly, the Bush administration is pursuing a policy to expand NAFTA to include Canada, setting the stage for North American Union designed to encompass the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. What the Bush administration truly wants is the free, unimpeded movement of people across open borders with Mexico and Canada. President Bush intends to abrogate U.S. sovereignty to the North American Union, a new economic and political entity which the President is quietly forming, much as the European Union has formed.

As evidence for this seemingly preposterous notion is the March 2005 “Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America” agreement, which

[P]roposes the creation by 2010 of a North American community to enhance security, prosperity, and opportunity. We propose a community based on the principle affirmed in the March 2005 Joint Statement of the three leaders that “our security and prosperity are mutually dependent and complementary.” Its boundaries will be defined by a common external tariff and an outer security perimeter within which the movement of people, products, and capital will be legal, orderly and safe. Its goal will be to guarantee a free, secure, just, and prosperous North America.

That this is just an extension of the principles of NAFTA and a recognition of the obvious fact that “collaboration in areas as diverse as security, transportation, the environment and public health” is necessary for adjoining countries that are each others’ dominant trading partners is apparently just a ruse to hide the evil plan to merge the countries.

No worries, though, because Corsi and the Minutemen vigilantes are ready to secure our borders and protect our sovereignty. Although, oddly, only from Mexico, not Canada.

Update: Steven Taylor weighs in, noting that Corsi obviously has no clue what he’s talking about since he doesn’t even know that Canada is already part of NAFTA. Further, he points out that international organizations of which the US are a member almost invariably involve us imposing our norms on others rather than vice-versa.

Even if we assume that the US is pursuing an EU-like structure for North America (which it isn’t), then does anyone in the class have any idea who would be the hegemonic power that would dominate such a North American Union? Yes, you in the back? Correct! That would be the United States. The power disparities among the US, Mexico and Canada mean that something like the EU is utterly impossible in North America.

Quite right.

What else really explains what is happening before our eyes. Why do our leaders pursue policies that would profoundly change our culture and society. We cannot assimilate 80 million Latinos (20 million Illegals already here, the rest to follow soon) who don’t speak our language and don’t have an appreciation of our history and basic American precepts without the USA becoming a totally different place.
The immediate threat is coming from the southern border and the minutemen are responding to that but both borders need to be secure.
We have been traqined to laugh these things off as conspiracy theories not wothy of intelligent consideration. We should open our eyes and see the deceptions around us. This is not just about cheap labor or easy voting blocks. Both the Administrarion and the Senate appear to be taking orders from somewhere else and not acting in the interests of the American people or protecting the constitution.

The NAU was the name for the American colonies belonging to the British in the book The Two Georges by Harry Turtledove and Richard Dreyfus.

The book goes forward from the concept that George Washington signed a deal with George III for more independence in the colonies. The book is set in the 20th Century.

North American union, gay union, workers union, why dude?

  7. bindare4u says:

People are still streaming over our borders and even just the 20 million illegals already here , if given amnesty, can bring in relatives and wives leading to 80 million or more total people to bring down wages and living standards not to mention totally changing the culture and all our political considerations. I don’t know how this will affect your community but I live in the state of Washington and it is already profoundly changing mine. This is being done without a vote or choice being given to citizens but all you can see is kooks espousing conspiracy theories. We may not be able to stop it anyway but open your eyes instead of laughing at those who call it to your attention. This is not happening by accident but by design.

Bindare4u, people used to say the same things about the Irish. My last name is Murphy; should I be sent back to the land of the ancestors?

  9. McGehee says:

What else really explains what is happening before our eyes.

    Stupidity.

Of course, it is a bedrock principle of conspiracy theory that stupidity exist only among those who don’t see the conspiracy. The conspirators, of course, have perfect foresight, and the whsitleblowers have perfect perception. Everyone else has been fooled.

  10. bindare4u says:

I am the son of immigrants but don’t know that we ever took in 80 million Irish, Italians and Poles added together. If one in three people is an illegal immigrant will it affect your taxes, job, jails, welfare system, and hospitals. Without a tradition of true democracy will they vote to protect your freedoms? Or will you find a Quebec like situation in the United States. Instead of name calling and snide remarks, think about those questions and answer honestly. We can legally allow the cream of the world into our borders and require that they are healthy, skilled, and have independent means or a sponsor as we have done in the past. Instead we allow millions of unchecked illegals to just walk in and demand their rights.
And yet, you see no problem and call me a lunatic.

Likely, Bush is thinking for a long term solution to counter the EU, and China. But where we lack in comparison to the EU is the idea of supranationalism. Europeans think of themselves more as Europeans than say Germans or French compared to Americans thinking of themselves as North Americans.

It’s a good idea except for the open borders part. Sovereignty is a good thing. We could use fewer regulations on North American Trade, but obviously need the necessary restrictions on migration.

  12. anjin-san says:

    “Bush is thinking”??

    That would be a first…

  13. lily says:

I didn’t call anyone a lunatic. I’m not afraid of a Quebec senario; if that was going to happen it would already be the staus quo in New Mexico. Every wave of immigration has been greeted with cries of fear. Remember the Know Nothings? At one point people in Washingotn and Oregon were so scared of Catholics that they passed a law requiring all children to attend public school so that they could be exposed to Protestant values. I live in an area of high immigration. My school has children from all over the world: India, Viet Nma, Taiwan, Korea, Guam, Samoa, Philipines, Mexico and Central America, Eastern Europe, Pakistan,Cambodia…. The valedictorian last year was a Filipina. The janitors are Russians, the carpet crew that did our remodel were Lebanese, the groundsmen are from Cambodia. Our community has a Korean shopping district, a Mexican market, Viet Namese flower growers, and restaurants of every ethnicity you could wish for. These people don’t threaten America. They are Americans now, or their children will be and I’m glad to have them. I’m proud to be part of a nation that is welcoming, tolerant, and rich in cultures.

A long term solution to the EU? In the long term there will be no EU.

the disparity is obvious, the U.S. cowtows to mexico at every turn.

  20. 714BOB says:

    lily,

I will preface my comments with this. I am a legal immigrant who spent a good 16 years of my life in my pursuit of U.S. Citizenship. I am a member of the California Bar and a productive member of society. I honor my citizenship papers and can definitely appreciate the hardship one faces in the proper citizenship path.

I believe everyone should have an opportunity to achieve greatness in life however, the laws of the land must be respected. Mexico enforces their borders rights and immigration law as do majority of other countries. In fact, Mexico was just criticized for their treatment of illegal immigrants from their southern border.

A bigger problem lies in that there is no desire to assimilate. For example, in Southern California Arbitron has shown that spanish music and television stations have almost overtaken english stations. If you want to see proof positive that the millions of illegal hispanics have no desire to assimilate I welcome you to spend a day with me in Orange County, CA. Specifically where I work, Santa Ana.

Why do you think the only flags you saw during the first protest were mexican flags. I proudly wave the American flag. No public relations agency had to tell me which flag to wave.

By the way, during the day the students walked out, I endured numerous racial attacks in which I was told to get out of their land. My buildings were covered with “Mexico #1” and “Viva Mexico” grafitti.

I Have been in Santa Ana since the 80’s and with the changes in the past ten years have seen what is in store for the future of America. To me, amnesty in any form is a slap in my face. I had to pay out of state tuition and was not eligible for student aid/grants because I was an foreign student even though I had resided in California since the 80’s.

  21. Bobo says:

I strongly disagree with the contention by some that there is apathy and resentment towards immigrants. There is a great deal of resentment toward illegals who flaunt our laws and burden our social system as well as for the governments that created this situation and continue to encourage it. We may need these people to help sustain the economy but as the demonstrations earlier this month showed they are by no means necessary. It is in everyone’s interest to lawfully admit and regulate this influx so they become integrated into the national fabric and give time for our systems to absorb them. We don’t need just more people we need more American people.

I really don’t care where immigrants come from but I surely do care where they are going. By that I mean I expect them to come here to be a part of this nation leaving their ethnic, religious and political baggage behind. Because of the great hardships and distances immigrants faced in the past we attracted the very desperate and the very determined both of whom sought to fit in and be a part of something great and it was most assured that they came to fully participate in the American ideal. Now it is just a hop across the border or an international flight with no real attempt by many to contribute or assimilate.

If the congress is not very careful now their legacy to our children will be a situation in the southwest akin to Quebec or worse Yugoslavia.
What is being created is an unassimilated permanent lower class that does not speak the language of success, who will be impoverished, and worse yet hopeless.
This pool of outsiders will be ripe for some demagogue to stir up resentment and violence. Just listen now to some of the rhetoric by the leaders of LARAZA and MEECHA.

  22. mk says:

I scanned the CFR report and what it recommends is consonant, in spirit, with what the Bush administration seems to be doing. Especially suspicious has been Bush’s characterization of the patriotic Minutemen as “vigilantes,” of illegals as “undocumented” aliens, and of the Senate amnesty bill as “not an amnesty.” Ad hominem and disingenuous rhetoric like that is not debate, and certainly not worthy of the President or Senators.

To repeat, many people have seen through the deceitful rhetoric and the absence of real action, but no one has made a persuasive case for what they meant until now. I’m not a policy expert, but the actions of Bush and the Senate Republicans –two parties that represent Big Money– seem to harmonize with the following quotations that I pulled from the think tank’s report.
