Rapper Big Hawk Shot to Death

John Edward “Big Hawk” Hawkins was murdered yesterday, joining a long line of those in his line of work.

Big Hawk, a rapper whose 2001 album reached No. 45 on Billboard’s rap chart, was shot to death, police said Tuesday. Hawk (real name: John Edward Hawkins) was a member of the late DJ Screw’s rap collective the Screwed Up Click and brother to rapper Fat Pat, who was killed in 1998. Hawk had planned to meet a friend Monday night but apparently arrived before the friend and walked to the side of the house, where he was shot several times, police said. He died at the scene.

Police do not have a suspect and their only lead involves a witness who saw a white compact car with tinted windows nearby shortly after the shooting, police spokesman John Cannon said.

Hawk, 36, was recently married and had two young sons.

He scored a regional hit with 2002’s “You Already Know” and was recently featured on the popular single “Swang” by Trae that included a posthumous contribution from Hawk’s brother. His 2001 self-titled album reached No. 45 on Billboard’s list of top R&B and rap albums.

I can’t say that I’m familiar with his work but, needless to say, 36 is way too young to die. The “rapper shot to death” storyline is, to pardon a pun, like a broken record.

Don’t you mean a scratched record?

    Hmmm.

Hawk, 36, was recently married and had two young sons.

    Hmmm.

Perhaps a sample is in order. How about the Afore-mentioned “You already know”?

you kno that oposites attract and hoes choose macks
and how some girls pack when playaz dont call them back?
why is that? why is that?
is it cuz its hard to ignore
the kind of man you adore but already spoken for?
or are you caught up in ya thang
holdin ya head in shame cuz you dont kno my real name
who’s to blame cuz it aint my fault
its another lesson taught when you fuckin with hawk
caught up in the rapture wasnt hard to capture
with my heavyweight frame and my 6 post stature
    i snatched ya
    whatever this game plan
wanted me to be your man but i had other plans
it was a one night stand
now the shit hit the fan
and every time you see me with her you wanna hold my hand you wanna hold my hand
but you dont understand that youre not my type
i got a wife and you were just my late-night hype

One wonders if he got married before, or after he came up with that one.

For those of us who remember records from our early childhood, it is a scratch that causes the record to skip and repeat itself. Nonetheless, the expression always has been “broken record.”

  4. Stevely says:

    Frank –

Chris’ comment was a joke, deliberate scratching records on a turntable as a musical instrument is a staple of hip hop.

    Stevely,
    Joke? What is joke?

  6. Jay says:

A scratch is a scratch it’s not being used as a staple of hip hop, scratch up any cd and see what hapens. UUUUhhh im not an old wrinkled person so i don’t remember “records”, and you understood what he meant bi “broken record” why do you have to bs and get off topic.

Oh and on the second line of those lyrics the word is act not pack.
