Ana Marie Cox To Be Time’s Washington Editor

This is more than a little distressing (WSJ, $):

Time Inc. hired former Wonkette blogger Ana Marie Cox to be Washington editor of Time.com. In her new role, Ms. Cox will head the Web site’s political coverage and produce stories for the print and online editions of the magazine. Ms. Cox joined Time magazine as a contributing writer in March. Previously, she was founding editor of the blog Wonkette, where she gained fame for her irreverent posts on political life and scandal in Washington, D.C. Earlier this year, Ms. Cox published a novel, “Dog Days,” a satire of life in Washington. She currently blogs at anamariecox.com.

How one goes from blogging about John Kerry’s member to being Time Magazine’s Washington editor is unknown to me, but best of luck to her.

About the Author: Robert has been blogging since May 2002 and contributing to OTB since June 2006. He has his MA in economics from Mississippi State University.

Is it the whole mag or just the Washington section of Time.com?

Hmmmm, I wish Ana Marie the best. But online editor or not, this is a pretty big promotion for her. Strange. But again, good luck!

I think her break came via the 'back door'.

Time has long been entertainment first, news second (or third, or ...). Makes perfect sense.

The question is do you think Ann Marie Cox can be a serious editor or will she revert to being a stand up (back door) comedienne.

The imporatant question is whether she's going to hire Jessica Culter as assistant editor.

It's hard to be say much about these things as less prominent bloggers saying anything bad about Cox are dismissed as envious. She's a talented woman and likely up to the job.

Still, it's a more than slightly unusual career path. One usually doesn't go from gossip columnist with a penchant for raunchiness to getting hired by TIME as a feature writer to being Washington Editor in a short span.

Yeah, James is right. If it was just about the "backdoor" thing, Andrew Sullivan would have had the job long ago.

(OK, bad taste, but it made me laugh)

I wonder if she will show up for work in pajamas or go all corporate and wear "real" clothes?

Why would this be 'distressing', to anyone?

We've known for years the politics that TIME subscribes to, and in it's turn, promotes. THey consider that their role, these days.

They've simply hired someone that can do the job better.

I should add, she can do the job better, because she actually BELIEVES that spreading her politics IS the job of a news editor.
