CPAC Candidates Criticize Columnist Coulter
The major candidates for the Republican nomination have criticized columnist Ann Coulter for controversial remarks she made at this year’s CPAC.
Three of the leading Republican presidential candidates on Saturday denounced one of their party’s best-known conservative commentators for using an antigay epithet when discussing a Democratic presidential contender at a gathering of conservatives here.
The remarks by Ann Coulter, an author who regularly speaks at conservative events, were sharply denounced by the candidates, Senator John McCain of Arizona, Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts. Their statements came after Democrats, gay rights groups and bloggers raised a storm of protest over the remarks.
Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference before an overflow crowd on Friday, Ms. Coulter said, “I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.”

Ms. Coulter, asked for a reaction to the Republican criticism, said in an e-mail message: “C’mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.”

This is a start. Still, simply criticizing particular remarks after the firestorm is hardly sufficient. It’s time for CPAC to quite embarrassing itself and the conservative movement by inviting this vile woman year after year.

Spineless sensitivity runs rampant in a country that depends on free speech for it’s very survival.
The left demands tolerance while exhibiting none.
Anyone even slightly right of center is used to being maligned and insulted daily from the left.
For these reasons and more, I find Ann Colter to be insightful and hilarious!
Forget about CPAC, isn’t it about time the entire conservative movement stopped associating with this continuous embarrassment? I mean, how many times does her baggage need to damage the GOP before they stop letting her represent them? Does she really provide enough extra votes to make her worth keeping around?

The problem is that Coulter didn’t just pop into existence ex nihilo; a lot of conservatives really like her, and think she “speaks truth to power.”
Coulter has made good points in the past. She’ll probably make good points in the future.
She gravely overshot her mark here (and elsewhere) in trying to play to the crowd. She should take a break, reassess her audience and her talking points, then try again.
‘Red meat’ is one thing. Stinking masses of offal are another.

It’s not about a lack of a sense of humor, it’s people getting mad that someone who supposedly wants to support them, keeps harming their public image, intentionally or not. It’s not funny when you have to convince people who’re not a homo-phoebe because of what somebody else said. Coulter is making herself a liability to the entire conservative movement.
Good god! Who cares about Ann Coulter–she’s a comedian, for crissakes.
This entire affair obscures the REAL embarassment that CPAC embraced this year: Dick Cheney.
Unlike Coulter, Cheney ACTUALLY HAS SUBSTANTIVE POWER. And, of course, his record has been one of embrassment and one that is harmful to the country.
Uh, wouldn’t that require that she be funny? Or at least that she attempt to be funny? I don’t recall being a vile, hateful extremist mouthpiece qualifying someone to be a comedian.
Coulter is still around because she is a pretty good reflection of what the Bush GOP is really about…
