 Outside the Beltway

Politics of Instant Gratification

The Politico’s Roger Simon laments the push toward early primaries: “The presidential nominating process used to have a beginning, middle and end. In 2008, it will have only a beginning. And then it will probably end.”

I disagree with his lament, as I have noted many times in past posts, and think the analysis that follows in the rest of his column is wrong. Still, that’s a really good lede.

He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia.

As the late Mayor Daley said, regardless of what things look like right now, somebody will be elected.

I think the national 1 day primary is a good idea except for one thing.

The early primaries can weed out the field. One big one day primary might not get a clear winner.

It is going to be interesting this tims as there are true races in both parties just go be nominated and what looks like a real battle next fall.
