Pet Food Recall Story Continues to Unfold

While we’re on the subject of self-promotion, I keep reporting on the pet food recall story that’s been unfolding for, now, three months because nearly every day there’s something new to report. Yesterday the “something new” was that acetaminophen had been detected in pet foods which had been sent to a laboratory for analysis by enterprising (and concerned) pet owners. Acetaminophen is not an approved food additive, can be quite toxic to cats in particular, and should not be present in food in any quantities whatever.

I continue to believe that the minimum effective remedy for the problem revealed in the course of this saga is mandatory country-of-origin labelling of food ingredients. Without that manufacturers and brand names have motivations to deny and conceal. With that the market can function to motivate manufacturers and brand names to do due diligence with respect to their suppliers.

And what about country-of-origin for medicines? After the horror story about antifreeze components in cough syrup, I was studying the bottles at Wal-Mart, trying to find which ones came from China. (Probably "all of them" ....) No indication.
Vitamins is the real horror story. Chinese suppliers have driven practically all of the domestic producers out of business.
Isn't this just big government interfering in our freedom to eat poisons?
