Best NFL News of the Month

Possibly the best NFL news of the entire offseason: Bryant Gumbel will no longer be doing play-by-play on NFL Network games.

The NFL Network said Friday it was looking for a new play-by-play announcer to work with Cris Collinsworth on the network’s Thursday and Saturday night games.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to call NFL Network games the past two years, which was a new experience for me,” Gumbel said in a statement. “But we’ve agreed that we’d all be better served going in different directions.”

The fans cannot but agree. Gumbel is a wretched play-by-play guy. This is a very good move for the NFLN brand.

I only watch the only football game that matters (Go Navy!) so this news affects me how?

Despite his politics and sneering attitude, I've generally liked Gumbel's work. REAL SPORTS, for example, is superb. He was also excellent as a studio analyst in his pre-TODAY show days. But he's just awful as a game announcer.

I would rejoice even more if the NFL and Charter cable could work out their differences and allow me to have access to NFLN.

But, to steal from Mr. Tony: Gumbel was a "gots ta go situation."

Oh, you're just attacking him because he's black.

It's funny, but his brother seems so level headed and unassuming. He may harbor some of his sentiments, but never lets it get in the way of his on air reporting. Tell me some one, what the greats of sports reporting politics are, there's a lesson in there some where.

Sadly, they'll just get someone else. No one seems to be very good at picking guys for these gigs, so I'm not holding my breath.

Wow - this is good news. An announcer shouldn't whine the details of the game. He just didn't fit.
