In exchange for pleading guilty to murder, Tremayne Durham gets life in prison and some junk food.
Durham agreed to plead guilty to murder — but only if he could get a break from jail food. The judge agreed and granted Durham a feast of KFC chicken, Popeye’s chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, carrot cake and ice cream. After Wednesday’s sentencing, Durham was to get the rest of the deal — calzones, lasagna, pizza and ice cream, his defense attorney confirmed. They will pay the tab.

Deputy District Attorney Josh Lamborn said Multnomah County Judge Eric Bergstrom made the right call in allowing the unusual plea agreement because it saved the expense of a trial and possible appeals.
It’s a mite peculiar but it’s hard to argue with the outcome.

It would have been cheaper to just execute him.
Methinks the good Doctor was being a bit too cutesy in his choice of headline for this post. A more complete (but too-verbose and less-interesting) headline would be along the lines of "Murderer Gets Free Chicken, Pizza in Exchange for Guilty Plea and Life Sentence."
Why do I see lawsuits coming from this guy in the future?
Either the deal was made under duress... (I'd never have agreed to it without the Popeyes....) or when he gains enough weight to be an issue, it's all the government's fault....
Isn't there a part about getting his family a free trip to DisneyLand? Or is that reserved for the Appeals process?

Yeah, I was just making a glib pun, as Boyd suggested above.
While the decision might be a bit strange, the judge should be applauded for his flexibility. However, this is a poor sign of what human beings can be reduced to in our criminal justice system, begging for food that isn't horrible.
