 Outside the Beltway

WaPo has a scanned copy of the front page of the January 5, 1983 paper, with links to the stories. It’s amusing how much has–and has not–changed.

Sound familiar? Alan Greenspan is fed chairman making news. GOP Senators are fighting with a Republican president. Fighting in the Middle East. A South Carolina Democrat making a bid for the White House.

Big changes: A Member of Congress wants to change parties; he resigns first. Apartheid was running strong in South Africa.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and infant daughter.

Paul Volker was chairman of the Fed in 1983. IIRC Greenspan was first appointed in 1987.

Oop. You're right. It didn't sound right to me but my memory was as fuzzy as the print on the scanned page. Greenspan was Chairman of the Social Security Advisory Committee in 1983.
