An Experiment In Inertia, Velocity And Kneejerk Reaction

Next on the agenda for the politically correct: ensure high school physics teachers avoid the use of water in calculating displacement because, you know, a lot of people have drowned and some of them were schoolchildren.

(Or, maybe David Lapp should just use a football for his experiments.)

how did we get to this place? 40 years ago every nine year old owned a .22 caliber rifle

Actually Floyd, that was every 9 year old in the South, Midwest or West had a plinking rifle.

Althouse had a post about a high school principal who was punishing a student for passing around 'Jolt' gum. His theory is think of the harm if the student getting the gum had a heart condition.

In that way of thinking, think of the harm of one of those pedophile teachers. We can't risk letting the teachers come in contact with the students. Then you post this about a teacher with a gun.

The bottom line is that the school was at extra risk for him doing this. Could a student have gotten a hold of the gun? Could the teacher snap? On the other hand, it has been going on for years and he was reaching the kids.

If we just didn't have the John Edwards of the world, there probably would never have been a problem.

I guess I don't see how keeping guns out of the schools is a PC issue. The article said people were especially sensitive to guns in school since Columbine, not that the laws came about because of Columbine. I wouldn't like the idea of my child's teacher bringing a gun to school. This experiment was performed quite nicely when I was in school with a homemade blow gun. No deadly weapons on campus necessary.

Now that's a cool experiment! Foolish in the present climate, but definitely cool.
