Agreement Shuts Door for Judge Henry Saad

Agreement shuts door for Michigan appeals nominee Saad (Detroit Free Press)

One Michigan judge appears to be a loser in a congressional compromise that cleared the way for Senate confirmation of some of President Bush’s judicial appointments. Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Henry Saad was nominated for the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Cincinnati. Saad ran into trouble because Michigan’s two Democratic senators, Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, argued that the Republican-controlled Senate never allowed confirmation hearings for President Clinton’s nominees to the court.

The agreement made no commitment to end the filibuster that has blocked a vote on his nominations.

The bizarre thing is that, originally, all ten of the nominees were deemed outrageously unacceptable. Suddenly, three are just peachy. What differentiates Saad from the others? It’s not clear. Indeed, it seems exceedingly random.
