ANNIKA SORENSTAM ON PGA TOUR

In the midst of the Title IX debate, we have the news that LPGA phenom Annika Sorenstam is thinking of playing in a PGA event. This strikes me as a no-win situation, other than for those who will profit from the circus that her appearance would become. Sorenstam is a terrific golfer and golf may be a sport(?) where gender differences matter less than most. But she will almost certainly finish rather poorly, because the men on the PGA tour are also phenomenal golfers who play the short game every bit as well as she can but who can drive the ball 100 yards or more further off the tee. So, the best female golfer on the planet–who’s more dominant on her tour than Tiger Woods is on his–will finish behind a bunch of guys that no one has ever heard of and thus demonstrate that the LPGA is comprised of people who couldn’t play professional golf if there weren’t a segregated tour for women. Why would she want to do that?
