AP: Tony Dungy to Retire

The AP and other outlets are reporting that Tony Dungy plans to retire from coaching after seven years as head coach of the Indianaopolis Colts:

He was meeting with players throughout the day to say goodbye, and will be replaced by assistant Jim Caldwell, the reports said, citing unidentified sources. The move comes a little more than a week after the Colts were eliminated from the playoffs.

An afternoon news conference was scheduled to make the announcement.

This is not especially surprising news. Dungy has quietly flirted with retirement at the end of every season for the last few years. And the team put a succession plan in place last offseason to facilitate a smooth transition to Caldwell when the time came.

Still, Dungy will be missed. His soft-spoken, humble style is increasingly rare in professional sports, not to mention his abundance of class.

Anybody I've ever talked to who met the man had nothing but good things to say about him. Even after he left Tampa, people around here still thought highly of him personally (perhaps more so than Gruden).
