Apple Launches New iPod

Apple launches new iPod; rolls out download stores in Europe & Canada (soundgenerator.com)

Apple has unveiled a new addition to the hugely successful iPod range, giving users more hard disc space and a colour screen for picture viewing. Available mid November, the iPod photo will come in 40gb and 60gb versions, holding up to 25,000 digital photos alongside your music library and displaying them on a high-resolution color screen. As well as extended battery life, the new model also features TV-out for sharing pictures on big screen televisions and projectors. “Having both your entire photo and music collections with you wherever you go is the next big thing,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Everyone has a digital camera and wants to enjoy and share their growing library of digital photos wherever they are. Unlike video content, photo content is free and abundant, and there are no copyright issues to deal with.”

Apple has also today launched its long-awaited EU iTunes Music Store, serving countries across Mainland Europe inside the European Union. Users in Austria, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain will all be able to access the store, which will sell individual tracks for euro 0.99. Apple today also announced it will launch the iTunes Music Store in Canada in November. “We’re excited to bring the iTunes Music Store to even more music fans across Europe, and with this expansion we now reach customers in almost 70 percent of the global music market,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Applications.

Interesting. One wonders how eager people who’ve paid $300 or more for their iPods will be to buy new ones that store photographs.

Or to buy one from a company that originally designed them to be thrown away when the battery died after a couple of years.

Jealousy is so unbecoming.

But I just bought an original iPod and I can't say that I'm that interested in the new feature. It's obviously aimed at a different market.

I do like the ability to have a 40GB hard drive readily at hand any time I need it.

And FWIW, boyd, I understand MS originally designed Windows XP to be a secure operating system, too. ;-)
