Frankly, not giving to the Church because of the scandals is a cop out. Since when does the Catholic Church refuse to help its laity because they're not perfect?

It's not absurd to leave out the paintings and other material possessions - they are not held for profit, nor will they be sold. An alternative way to account for them would be to offset the tourist income that results. I think you'd find out that they don't bring in a huge profit.

> the absurdity of not counting the enormously
> valuable material possessions in the Vatican's
> collection

This would imply that you would be willing to sell or mortgage them to raise money.

Perhaps you are willing to do the same with the original copy of the Constitution or Declaration of Independence to reduce the deficit? After all, they are not counted as assets on the books of the U.S.

I almost forgot. Many Americans are not pleased with Cardinal Law and his Vatican position. He belongs in jail

There is no doubt that many Americans are not giving anywhere near the amounts previously given because they are disgusted with the Churches lack of will to defrock or punish those who are committing sex crimes against the kids.
I have heard it said many times that the church is a haven for those who commit sex crimes.
