CHICAGO MANUAL

Chicago Manual of Style – The Fifteenth Edition is due out, appropriately enough, on the 15th. The last edition was in 1993, well before the rise of the Web as a major player. There are a lot of modifications of longstanding documentation and usage rules to bring it into alignment with common usage (e.g., abbreviating states with their postal codes).

ONLY an academic could get excited about this. It's like me running around shouting when the new phone book comes (scene from "The Jerk").

During my college days (6 years ago) all my profs required APA style. But I was taught MLA style (new edition out too) in freshman comp. Which should be used, and why three style guides? That's like the web using 3 different versions of HTML.

Sean,

Basically, different academic disciplines have different needs. Indeed, even within my own field of political science, some subdisciplines use Chicago/Turabian and others use a variant of APA.
