COL Hackworth is truly one of the most inspiring, and honest, fighting men in American Military History. Few have put in as much time and effort on and off the battlefield as the Colonel. I hope to follow the example of Colonel Hackworth in my own Military career: I’ll take care of my men, speak my mind, and act with honor and integrity.

I met Hack when he did my radio show in the late
80's. In nearly 30 years of broadcasting, I never met a man like him . . . because there were no men like him. The saddest thing for me is that he had to go and too many ribbon waving, flag carrying, duty shirking assholes continue to to spout-off.
Hack's ticket punchers are still with us . . . mostly in D.C. Sad. We have lost the last of the free spirits, and we may never again encounter his wisdom. We have lost a patriot.

I had the pleasure of talking with Col. Hackworth on different occasions. He spoke with me at length about Gulf War Illness. Col Hackworth offered me some direction as to best serve our veterans and urged me to work towards becoming a leader.

It has been sometime since I last spoke with "Hack" and I was quite moved to learn about his death just today. I've considered few men in my life as idols, but Col Hackworth was indeed one of mine.

Well, I followed Hack's advice and orders. I got involved in veterans issues and I now sit on the Board of Directors of the National Gulf War Resource Center. www.ngwrc.org

I urge all that see this posting to come join us or make a donation in his honor, as we continue to support our troops and veterans.

I render a final salute. Rest in peace , Sir. It is well deserved. We will carry on from here.

About Col you are already hearing the caveat"I did not always agree with him" Well that can be said of anyone Col Hackworth more than most. He said what he thought. Now I will add my own caveat.David Hackworth was one of us,and the us out there know who we are. He was a combat soldier an infantryman. His job was to seek out and kill the enemy. It is a tought dirty business.Cheap shots from swill like Charles Krohn and David Plotz will not deminish a man like Col Hackworth.There petty jealousy's will fall short of there mark like so many bullets did. After all there sniping at a legend.

I am a distant cousin of Hack's - my grandmother was a Hackworth and he and I figured out by mail that his Great-great grandfather and mine were brothers. I was able to meet him once, at a book signing in Austin. Wish I could have known him better, but I'm pleased to have his books and his signature on one of them.

I met Colonel Hackworth in Whitefish, MT on a casual basis. He lived here, on the lake, for some time.

The Hack did whatever he could to improve the plight of America's Fighting Forces whenever and wherever he could...no matter WHAT the "brass" might think or say.

While I didn't always agree with him 100%, you ALWAYS knew where you stood with him. Too bad that is a rather rare commodity in today's political climate. When it comes down to the actual living and fighting conditions for our Forces, there is no room for "compromise".

I know for a fact that the took my concerns to heart when it came to Gulf War deployments and even touched on Project SHAD/112 on my behalf.

There will NEVER be too many like The Hack....!!!

I had the privilage of meeting "Hack" 5 years ago during his book signing @ West Point. The Col. was everything that this NonCom had heard he was. A straight shooter who lived and breathed "take care of the troops". He will live on with the lessons he has taught to countless warriors; that have saved lives, are saving lives and will continue to save lives.That's the legacy for this American Soldier and Patriot.
Respectfully;
