CULT OF ID?

Christopher Hitchens has penned a rather whimsical piece on what he terms “the Cult of ID – Our strange obsession with driver’s license photos.” Sparked by the case of the Muslim woman in Florida who claimed having to have a picture taken sans veil violates her faith, Hitchens muses about the value of the entire process:
Several times a week, to enter a TV studio say, or to board a plane, I have to produce a tiny picture of my face. It’s not enough that I show up in person: I have to bring an image of myself along.
He also notes that drivers’ licenses are “probably the most fakeable artifact in our society.” His solution to this dilemma is, well, novel.
