Cyndi Lauper: 50

Cyndi Lauper: 50, She Still Just Wants to Have Fun

If you’re searching for evidence that 50 is the new 40, as the saying goes, you need look no further than to Cyndi Lauper, the endearing outer-borough, dumb-like-a-fox kook, whose kewpie-doll face and piercing little-girl voice suggest a fusion of Betty Boop and Melanie Griffith.

Ms. Lauper, a mid-1980’s star who briefly gave Madonna a run for her money, has settled easily into the mini-niche of fair-haired rockers in the bohemian tradition of Deborah Harry, the first blond bombshell to flaunt an ironic sense of herself as a real-life animated character. And at Town Hall on Thursday evening Ms. Lauper. who recently released her first album of pop standards, “At Last” (Epic), exuded enough energy and high spirits to suggest that 50 might be the new 30.

Damn, I’m getting old.

But you'll never catch up with Cyndi - or, for that matter, with me (I hit 50 last year myself).

And anyway, in another ten years 60 will be the new 50.

I'll bet that you even think that Jay Leno is the "new guy" on the Tonight Show and that "Next Generation" is the "new" Star Trek.
