Sean Hackbarth watched the Deans* on ABC last night and gives them mixed reviews. Sean remarks, of the ABC web site roundup,

It’s not great damage control when the story is titled “I’m a Human Being”.

Which, for those Of A Certain Age, immediately brings to mind “I am not an animal! I am a human being! I…am…a man!”

*It is apparently a maxim of American politics that liberated women suddenly start using their husbands’ last names when their campaigns go south. Dr. Steinberg is suddenly “Judy Dean” and Hillary Rodham became, briefly, “Hillary Clinton.” Sure, two examples might not be enough to build a grand thesis on, but it’s a trend.

For the record, Judy Dean has always been "Judy Dean" when it comes to her private life -- as a parent, active in the community, etc. She is only Dr. Steinberg at work, which arose mainly as a function of the fact that she and Howard began their practice together, and it was confusing to have two "Dr. Deans" in the same office.

I also want to defend Mrs. Dean. I'm sure with her husband as governor, she didn't necessarily want lots of attention as a doctor. From the interview she doesn't look the type who wants or likes the limelight.
