Go ahead and name a way it could be more incompetent, then.

Well, I suppose we could have simply lined them all up and shot them in the streets...

I say that with tongue in cheek (as there are, in fact, very few ways we could have screwed up the post-combat phase more if we were deliberately trying), but there is no shortage of wingnuts on the far right that think of my suggestion as "a good start"...

Go ahead and name a way it could be more incompetent, then.

We could have let the keep their weapons and left large weapon stores open to be looted, then we could have challenged them to "bring it on."

Really? Out of all the myriad ways it might have been handled, we managed to pick the one single most incompetent manner not only possible, but imaginable?

The hyperbole seems to be a little over the top.

The problem, as with de-Baathification generally, was that it was handled in the most incompetent manner imaginable.

this may be CYA, but it is direct response to the claim by Bush that he was outside the loop on the decision to disband the army. Talk about CYA.

Bremer deserves responsibility for not seeing what a rotten idea it was to begin with, but the interesting thing is that he's one of a slowly-growing cadre of former repubs unwilling to be cast as idiots to preserve Bush's reputation.

Equally interesting is that Bush is either lying out his butt or simply isn't aware that this idea came from his own people in DC. Which of these two possibilities makes him look worse, I wonder...
