Female Suicide Bombers Hit Iraq, Sri Lanka

Female Suicide Bombers Hit Iraq, Sri Lanka An exceedingly rare occurrence, a suicide bombing carried out by a female terrorist, has happened twice today, presumably independently, hitting the capitals of Iraq and Sri Lanka.

USA Today:

A woman wearing an explosives belt blew herself up near an American patrol northeast of Baghdad — a rare female suicide bombing that wounded seven U.S. troops and five Iraqis, the U.S. military said Wednesday.

CSM:

A female suicide bomber struck Wednesday in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, killing herself and one other person, but not the government minister who was the intended target. Authorities blamed the attack on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), or Tamil Tigers, whose long-running separatist war flared up last year after the collapse of a Norwegian-brokered 2002 cease-fire.

See my January 2006 piece for TCS Daily, “Suicide Girls,” for background on the phenomenon.
