Geography of a Recession

This is a bit old, and hopefully it hasn’t been posted here before, but the New York Times has an interactive map that shows unemployment rates by county (as of December 2008).

Job losses have been most severe in the areas that experienced a big boom in housing, those that depend on manufacturing and those that already had the highest unemployment rates.

The related article is here.

About the Author: Steve has a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles and attended graduate school at The George Washington University, leaving school shortly before staring work on his dissertation when his first child was born. He works in the energy industry and prior to that worked at the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the Division of Price Index and Number Research.
