Hamas is going to go down hard regardless, and Bryan, I believe both parts of your side note are correct.Oh, and I think some one has finally found the Dem's a platform they could feel good about running on, "we need a firm Islamic and Arabic position to confront this challenge", please, give it a shot, it seem to fit your type of free speech and your type of human rights a little better. i.e. chanting mobs with crazy signs, and dang' you could could keep abortion going through all ages with just a few rocks!

Just when I think my government has reached an absolute bottom of stupidity ...

This one's easy, folks. Just imagine that you're reading a story about Hamas's determination to destabilize the American gov't due to its disappointment over the outcome of the 2004 presidential election.

Would that make you think "gee, we need to change our attitude so that Hamas is better disposed to us," or would you think, "let's kick some Hamas ass"?

Sigh. This leak, if anything, will *rally* support for Hamas amongst Palestinians. What foolish, foolish people we have running things.

I think the strategy is a pretty crappy one for us to be involved in, but reading the story, I'm also a little disappointed in the story. Buried in the middle of the story is the fact that the destabilization effort would become active if Hamas didn't meet three requirements:

They say Hamas will be given a choice: recognize Israel's right to exist, forswear violence and accept previous Palestinian-Israeli agreements — as called for by the United Nations and the West — or face isolation and collapse.

That seems like a reasonable request, not a plan for destabilization.

If Hamas follows the UN's lead, there won't be any need for a destabilization. If they don't, then a "plan" wouldn't really be necessary, would it? They'd be destabilizing the situation themselves.

As a side note, is it just me or does it seem like the NYT is actively out to sabotage U.S. and Israel in the middle east? Or if not them, perhaps they are being used as useful idiots for someone who is.
