Oil prices were up .61 cents per barrel, gasoline prices were up .035 cants per gallon and the market was up $ 100.00. Does that sound like rising oil prices have the same effect as we experienced with Katrins.

Herb, your deep-down understanding of "Hammas" aside, the markets would not be rising if they anticipated general war in the Mideast. Look what a relatively small jump in oil prices recently did to the Dow.

Anderson:

I see you are engaged in "Wishful Thinking" again. When are you and others going to realize that Hammas is an Iranian organization and the last thing they want is peace. They only want to Kill anyone, anywhere, to spread their religious ideology. You remind me of Chamberlain in the pre WW11 days when he to engaged in a "wishful thinking" state of mind. Hammas will never lose their desire and will to destroy Israel and the U.S.

Interestingly, the market jumped by 100 points today, could they are anticipating a total mid east war where the investors can make a fortune with war production.

Given Fatah's record in government one can understand why Palestinian voters wanted a change. Good riddance to the Fatah crypto-terrorists and kleptocrats. This reminds me of when Sharon and Likud came to power and all the wise people started yelling that the sky is falling. Fact is that Sharon's security fence has severly limited the effectiveness of Hamas's (and Fatah's) tactics. Then, by bringing real security to Israel, Sharon put himself in the position of dealing from strength both at home and in the region. You know that when a deal is made with Sharon it will stick. Let us hope that Sharon's successors are as tough and as realistic. The same might turn out to be the case with Hamas. If they want the responsibility of government, and no one could be worse than Fatah, they will have to deal with Israel.

I've had that problem with the preview engine here ever since James started requiring it. Apparently it's a Wordpress bug.

Strangely, LJD and I seem to agree:

The real question is” Will this new ‘leadership’ have the authority and will to prevent their constituency from waging attacks on innocent Israelis.

That, and not whether Northern Ireland Israel has the right to exist, is the big question right now.

My factoid on Palestinians' wish for peace is quoted off Morning Edition, for better or worse. But I think it's plausible. Few of these people remember life before Israel. I think most of them would like steady jobs & some hope of raising their kids decently.

The problem, of course, is the minority of young footloose men with guns who are enjoying the party too much & won't stop. Does Hamas have the wish and will to rein them in or stamp them out? We will see.

Pooh?
'Most Palestinians polled say they want peace with Israel'
Yes, dead people tend to be 'peaceful'.
'I think it’s silly to waste effort on the “pledge” or on disarming Hamas; the former is ideologically impossible right now'
You're offended by 'bring them on' in the war on terror, yet you don't see any reason for Hamas to recall their pledge to destroy Israel? I would think this is fairly fundamental to any peace deal.
BTW, from where I sit it seems the Palestinians have, without reason, violated every chance for peace they have been given.
The real question is" Will this new 'leadership' have the authority and will to prevent their constituency from waging attacks on innocent Israelis.

I believe all wars end, and it is written that this one will. From the history book i have read, the one where i have gained this information (get this it's a history of our future)says, this war will not end in time but at the end of time as we know it.Sorry if i stuck my thumb in any one's eye daring to refer to the Bible. But tell me why i should not believe what it says, tell me why the truth i find within it is not truth. You can listen to a million opinions and the they get you nowhere, nothing and even better more questions.I do enjoy Blogging, even seeing that i can not spell or form a proper paragraph.but please think about this;It is a good thing to care,an even better thing to help, but the best thing is to ask of our God what it is that he has created us to do and then thank him for the honer of the privilege to serve.P.S.But as they say, thats just my opinionP.S.(t.i.b.t.b.t)That i believe to be true.

Once again, in a fairly free and somewhat honest vote, the Palestinians have chosen to continue waging war against Israel.

Pooh. Most Palestinians polled say they want peace with Israel. Hamas won because it was the only plausible alternative to the corrupt Fatah, not because they have pledged to destroy Israel. Somehow I suspect that Hamas's leaders get through days or weeks at a time without recalling this pledge.

Will Hamas move in the direction that the IRA's moved, or will their diehard-terrorist members drive the movement?

I think it's silly to waste effort on the "pledge" or on disarming Hamas; the former is ideologically impossible right now, and the latter would be foolish of Hamas. The U.S. and Israel should concede those points in exchange for renewing the cease-fire and renouncing terror attacks on civilians.

Get Hamas used to being a political entity, & they will act the part.
