 Outside the Beltway

Huffington Post Publicity Machine

The reviews have been mostly negative so far, but the Huffington Post is already at #14 in the The Blogosphere Ecosystem, one slot behind OTB and one slot ahead of NRO’s The Corner. Considering that it’s taken OTB over two years and NRO much longer to achieve that level of linkage and that THP has been around less than a week, that’s simply staggering.

Even Wonkette didn’t climb the Ecosystem that quickly. Clearly, the old adage that any publicity is good publicity holds for the blogosphere.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia.

Perhaps this should add another suggestion to those wishing to get linkage for their blogs: write stuff people want to make fun of. Apaparently that is as good, if not better, than nekkid people.

Have you seen this? http://huffingtontoast.com/ IMO, it's better than the orginal.

The reason for this is - is all the links (well duh) .. but once the links are off of the first page in your blog .. the TTLB crawler will have a harder time finding them .. but IMO her traffic doesn't represent her ranking on the list.

It certainly didn't hurt to disarm large conservative blogs like Captain's Quarters...and OTB by blogrolling them.

One question, if Paris Hilton starts a blog, where will she be after a week?

Could the blog's visitors be akin to the well known "gawkers" who simply must slow down on their way to work to inspect a car wreck on the opposite side of the freeway?

I had heard that Huffington's alleged blog was allowing comments on their "Newswire" section. That's partially true. The comments have to be pre-approved before appearing, which probably explains why most of the posts don't have comments. What the hell is Arianna so afraid of?

Um, hello? None of us are famous already. The people on Huffington have put in a heckuva lot more time getting cred than we have on our wee blogs.

I suspect her TTLB ecosystem rating will crash in a few weeks--the Ecosystem only pulls links from blogs' front pages. She's getting a ton of linkage from folks like, for instance, you, who have no intention of adding her to their permenant blogroll. Give it a while for the initial "Hey look at this train wreck!" links to scroll off into the archives, and her blog will drop like a stone.
