InstaPundit Moves to Pajamas Media

Pajamas Media has announced that Glenn Reynolds’ InstaPundit blog has moved to their servers.

Today Pajamas Media shook the blogosphere with a major site development announcement: InstaPundit Glenn Reynolds is becoming a part of the PJM main portal. Reynolds, who averages more than six million page views per month according to Nielsen, was recently named one of the Forbes Top 10 Web Celebs.

“I’m excited to begin offering commentary and analysis directly on Pajamas Media’s main page,” said Reynolds. “I’m looking forward to this new undertaking and to continuing my relationship with the PJM community and all the communities it touches with its groundbreaking global news and opinion pieces.”

“Pajamas Media is proud to bring Glenn Reynolds into our main portal. Clearly, our respect for Glenn, his informed commentary, expertise, achievements, and renown throughout the blogging and news media community cannot be overstated,” said Roger L. Simon, co-founder and CEO of Pajamas Media.

I was wondering what was up when I saw a note at Glenn’s old site yesterday afternoon that he was repointing his DNS but I presumed he just had a new webhost.

Certainly, this gives PJM a huge boost. InstaPundit is arguably the number one brand in the blogosphere.

Frankly, though, I don’t see what Glenn gets out of it. He’s easily the most well known and highly trafficked solo blogger out there. One would think he already enjoys whatever synergies come with being a PJM founder and board member. His feed is now prominently placed on the PJM page but one would think there’s pretty high overlap between InstaPundit readers/subscribers and those who visit the PJM portal.

UPDATE: An emailed inquiry to Glenn reveals that this has been in the works since the inception of PJM and has merely been delayed for various reasons.

UPDATE 2: Andrew Sullivan dubs the merger “Instajamas” and guesses, “I imagine it’s easier to sell ads in a bundle. And Glenn probably doesn’t have to do too much administrative work on his end. Win-win, if they’ve made a deal to split the revenue equitably.”

Incidentally, Sully is probably the only other solo blogger coming close to being in Glenn’s class in terms of traffic and name recognition. I put them into different categories, though, as Andrew is a full-time journalist paid to blog by an institution rather than an amateur blogging around a tangentially related day job.

Cheaper servers?

Maybe it's that simple. I dunno.

I suspect this was less "what does Glenn get" than "What can Glenn do to help others".

I still don't see what PJM gets. Instapundit.com redirects to PJM's server, but it isn't PJM's home page. There's an Instapundit column there, but that's simply RSS and didn't require a server move. Other weblogging networks have individual domains (Gawker, b5) so I don't know the business rational for moving Instapundit.

He's now at http://pajamasmedia.com/instapundit/ rather than instapundit.com. So he's on their domain now. Presumably, he's still on his old server and it's just a DNS repoint but I don't know.
