Why don't we just lend them our constitution? It was written by some really sharp guys, it has worked well for a long time, and we aren't really using it much anymore...

The ability to amend our Constitution was one of the key elements that made acceptance possible and it would seem that the Iraqi's are trying to do the same in order to establish their government in a permanent fashion. To say that it is a, "failure" is similar to saying the US was a failure when our Constitution was ratified and then had to be amended to establish the details of our rights as citizens. The Iraqi's are doing the same, establishing the foundation of their country and then ironing out the details through time. They have accomplished a great deal in a short time. The left will use ANY excuse to blame the President for "failure" which is not a surprise!

It took the US those 4 years and their Constitution wasn't good. I mean it took them until the 1920's to finally amend it to where women can vote. Don't expect a decent Iraqi constitution this fast, it'll take years to optimize it.

It took the US 4 years to put together a constitution. Is there any news the fever swamp will not denigrate?

[...] Right after my post below, I note that James Joyner links to an AP story that states Iraq Leaders Agree on Draft Constitution : Iraqi politicians agreed Monday on a draft constitution but decided to put off two key issues -- women’s rights and whether Kurds might someday secede -- so the document could be submitted to parliament by a midnight deadline, two Shiite officials said.
