An Iraqi legislator was shot and killed by militants who stormed into her house on Wednesday, Iraqi police said. Lamia Abed Khadouri al-Sagri, a member of the National Assembly and of outgoing premier Ayad Allawi’s Iraqi List party, was killed in her house in the Hay Aour neighborhood in eastern Baghdad, police Capt. Ali al-Obeidi said. Insurgents have targeted senior lawmakers and Iraqi politicians in a bid to further destabilize reconstruction efforts in the country.

Last week, a suicide car bomb detonated near a police checkpoint as Allawi’s convoy drove home. One policeman was killed and two were wounded, Iraqi police said. Allawi escaped unharmed.

A shameful act. One would hope the murder of democratically elected political leaders would further diminish the support the so-called insurgents have among the Iraqi populace. Killing American soldiers, who many perceive as foreign-infidel occupiers, is one thing. Targetting the legitimately elected government is quite another.

Iraqi MP Killed, No Government Announced (Reuters)

Gunmen shot an Iraqi woman member of parliament Wednesday in a fresh shock to politicians whose failure to form a government three months after elections has allowed violence to thrive unchecked. Iraqi police said Lame’a Abed Khadawi, a member of caretaker Prime Minister Iyad Allawi’s political party, was shot outside her house in eastern Baghdad. She is believed to be the first person in the 275-seat National Assembly to be killed.

Police said gunmen knocked at her door and shot her when she answered.

Armed men have shot and killed a member of Iraq’s parliament outside her house in Baghdad. Iraqi police identified the victim as Lamia Abid Khadawi, a member of caretaker Prime Minister Iyad Allawi’s political party. The attack on Wednesday occurred in front of her home in eastern Baghdad. She is thought to be the first person in the 275-member National Assembly to be killed. The assembly was formed after elections on 30 January this year.

Even Al-Jazeera doesn’t try to spin this one as anything other than murder.
