J-BLOGS

Daniel Drezner notes that Daniel Weintraub’s blog on the Sacamento Bee’s website is now going to be filtered through an editor rather than published directly. This certainly lessens its value–indeed, its status–as a weblog. But it’s hardly unreasonable for a newspaper to want to maintain minimal editorial control of content on its site. Most editorial writers and all reporters have to suffer this indignity.

My suggestion for Weintraub if he desires to direct publish his blog: Buy a domain and some server space and have at it. I’m led to believe that a few million folks are doing it that way.

Update (1519): If he’s cash strapped, I understand that there’s space availble via something called BlogSpot for free but have heard that the service isn’t very good.

Update (2023): Dean Esmay agrees. Laurence Simon concurs in part and dissents in part. Mickey Kaus disagrees vehemently.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and infant daughter.

I'm curious as to whether the Sac Bee could try to do to Weintraub what the Hartford Courant did to Dennis Horgan earlier this year: prohibit him from publishing a blog with his name on it. Recall our earlier discussion about First Amendment rights; http://arguewithsigns.net/mt/archives/000112.html
