JOHN RITTER, R.I.P.

John Ritterdied last night from heart failure at the age of 54. He is best known as the star of the 1977-84 sitcom “Three’s Company.” He was again having success with “8 Simple Rules … For Dating My Teenage Daughter,” which was about to begin its second season.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and infant daughter.

Three's Company was on until 1984? That's as surprising as Ritter's untimely death.

It was rather shocking. Johnny Cash was no surprise, since his health had been lousy for years.

And, yup, the show was on forever in various incarnations. Indeed, Ritter starred in a follow-on show that I never saw called "Three's a Crowd" for another year. And, of course, there was the Ropers spinoff which ran 1979-80.

I remember Three's a Crowd and The Ropers, I just don't remember Three's Company lasting quite that long. Hmmm...
