Katrina: Mississippi Braves Season May be Over

Among the lesser inconveniences caused by Hurricane Katrina’s destruction is the likely cancellation of the rest of the season for the Atlanta Braves’ AA affiliate, the Mississippi Braves, who play outside of Jackson.

Marooned in a hotel near Turner Field by Hurricane Katrina, the Class AA Mississippi Braves don’t know if they will play again this season. Although their stadium in the Jackson suburb of Pearl didn’t suffer major damage, most of the area doesn’t have power. The team was in Montgomery and bused to Atlanta in stormy weather Monday. “It was a scary trip,” manager Brian Snitker said. “But we certainly couldn’t go back to Mississippi.

A three-game series against Chattanooga has already been cancelled and four games through Labor Day against Carolina remain in jeopardy. “I hope we play this weekend, but we’ll have to live in the clubhouse,” Snitker said. “At least the stadium never lost power.”

The local (DC) radio guys were speculating yesterday evening about the impact of the hurricane on the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. Despite the views of one of the show hosts, the Saints will surely play this year–somewhere. The NFL is a multi-billion dollar business and can afford to make whatever accomodations are necessary. Minor league baseball, which is mostly just a training ground for the Big Leagues, is unlikely to go out of their way to reschedule a few games.
