Perhaps the idea is to radcially elevate the op/ed page. While I concur that these guys are usually unknown, there is the example of the WSJ and Paul Gigot as a high-profile op/ed page editor of a page considered to be influential. And then there's Tony Blankley (sp?) at WaTi.

On topic, I think Kinsley is smart and a good editor but a lousy columnist. But perhaps the war and Bush have just pushed him to the edge, seems to be a regular thing these days.
