Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow Announce Breakup

Lance Armstrong and Sherl Crow are breaking up.

Cycling legend Lance Armstrong and rock star Sheryl Crow have split five months after announcing their engagement, the couple said in a joint statement on Friday. The seven-time Tour de France champion has three children from a previous marriage. It would have been Crow’s first marriage.

“After much thought and consideration we have made a very tough decision to split up,” the statement said. “We both have a deep love and respect for each other and we ask that everyone respect our privacy during this very difficult time.”

Privacy is not something that comes with being a public figure, as the need for the press release to begin with demonstrates.

They’re people first and, really, this is none of our business. Armstrong is an athlete and Crow is a singer; nothing much beyond that matters.

Still, one can’t help but speculate as to why the two broke up.

They seemed so right for each other.

Update: More from People:

Rumors of trouble began surfacing around Christmas, but the couple insisted there was no truth to them and that they were moving forward with wedding plans for this spring. Crow recently tried on wedding gowns, including a Vera Wang with what she said was “a particularly absurd amount of meringue,” for a photo shoot for Allure magazine and told reporters that she would be marrying her cyclist boyfriend in Austin.

The couple met at a charity event in October 2003 and began dating a short time later. “I knew pretty quickly that I was totally into him,” Crow told PEOPLE in November. Armstrong popped the question in Sun Valley, Idaho, in late August in a proposal Crow called “very romantic.”

and Wizbang Pop! which warns, “[A]s the old axiom goes, ‘bad things come in threes.’ Okay, maybe that’s not an axiom, but I have a fever, and you’re not here to learn rocket surgery. I mean, get ready for some more break-ups… I’m just sayin’…”
