Legal Affairs Debate Club – Should the Draft be Brought Back?

Phil Carter and I are debating this week at Legal Affairs on the topic Should the Draft be Brought Back? His initial post is up and I’ve just sent in my reply, which should be posted shortly.

About the Author: James Joyner is the publisher of Outside the Beltway and the managing editor of the Atlantic Council. He's a former Army officer, Desert Storm vet, and college professor with a PhD in political science from The University of Alabama. He lives just outside the Beltway in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and infant daughter.

I notice in your short biographies at the top of the page, Phil is listed as a former Army officer, whereas you are not.

Probably just an oversight, but one which potentially labels you as an "ivory tower academician."

It is my observation that liberals cannot afford to allow the draft to return if they wish to retain any political power. If young people are subjected to military service...they might gain some strength of character and (heaven forbid) think for themselves...the bane of liberal politics...we think for you!

"We should also significantly reduce the strain on the force by mothballing some of our armored divisions... ....the need has been apparent since the Somalia operation and the wheels are moving far too slowly."

Wasn't it ARMOR that took and held Iraq- twice?
I also thought ARMOR was exactly what they needed in Somalia, but the UN was slow to provide it.

We need more Special Forces, MPs, Civial Affairs, but not at the loss of armor troops. Consider that armor is great at adapting to MP-type missions, with light vehicles, as in Bosnia, Kosovo, and now in Iraq.
